ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5ON 1 releases Photo RAW 2017.5

ON1 Software announced today the release of ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5, the first major update to their new and exciting RAW Photo editing system.

The update contains 6 added features as well as 2 program updates

What’s New in This Build

LENS CORRECTION — The new Lens Correction pane will automatically detect your lens and reduce distortion, chromatic aberration and peripheral fall-off.

COMPARE MODE — Select a series of photos and zoom and pan each of them at the same time.

DETAILS PANE — Sharpening and Noise Reduction is improved and has been merged into a new Details Pane for global corrections on raw photos giving better results in both areas.

IMPROVED SEARCH — Search using a variety of metadata fields and decide if the search must match all or any of the search criteria.

CLONE STAMP — The powerful clone stamp retouching tool from Layers is inside Develop and Effects as part of the non-destructive workflow.

STACKING PRESETS — The Insert Preset command is now available to stack presets in Effects.

LIGHTROOM® MIGRATION ASSISTANT — Migrate photos, their metadata and collections.

IMPROVED PRESET MANAGEMENT — Delete and rename preset categories as well as export categories for sharing and back-up.

ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5

For those of you that may be unfamiliar with ON1 Photo RAW 2017, It is a Standalone (or plug- in for Lightroom and Photoshop) RAW Image Management and Editor (don’t worry, It edits Jpeg’s, Tiff’s and PSD’s also all non destructively)

It features a simple File Browser instead of a “Catalog” that you need import and export from. Allowing you to simply navigate to the folder your photos are in and then it quickly shows you those images instead of waiting for an Import and Preview Build to happen before you can start working on your  images. These is far more familiar and intuitive for most users that find Catalog  systems confusing.

Improvements to Browse

Part of the new update were three improvements to the browse module. A new and improved Search function which let you fine tune your search to include or exclude information to let you find your images quicker and more precisely.

The second is a new Compare feature which lets you choose any images and compare them in both pan and zoom areas. Try doing that in Lightroom can be quite the mess

Finally, you can now Migrate your photos, metadata and collections right into ON1 Photo RAW 2017 using the Lightroom Migration Assistant  under Plug-in Extras in Lightroom. Get all your metadata including Keywords on a XMP Sidecar that ON1 can read. Plus make all your collections you made in Lightroom now are quickly transferred as “Albums” in ON1. Note that while this transfers your RAW Images. If you have done any developing in LR that will be burned into a Jpeg Tiff or Jpeg

Also there is now RAW support for 14 new Camera Models

Improvements to Develop

From the simple browse function you can quickly take your images into a Develop Module where you can make all your basic adjustments; Exposure, Saturation, Contrast, Sharpness etc.

Two new features added to the Develop Module are Lens Correction (to adjust for aberrations and distortions in our lenses) I’m really glad they added this as I use a lot of wide angle lenses and like to be able to correct for some of the distortions inherent to such lenses

A new Clone Stamp tool is available in the Develop Module (but is also available in Effects). Always good to have a straight forward clone stamp tool for when content aware type tools like the Perfect Eraser or Retouch tool may not be appropriate.

Finally the sharpening and noise reduction controls have been centralized in a new Details Pane. Since these often go hand in hand it makes it easier to work on those in one area

Improvements to Effects

The effects module is where you can add individual effects to an image, Things like Glow, Grunge, HDR Effects and Black and White effects.

In the Effects module there are always presets available which may be as simple as Starting point adjustments you can use to get your images on the way to a finished image all the way to advanced presets that do it all for you including effects but are fully adjustable in the Modules  on the right hand of the screen.

What’s new is that you can now Stack presets for multiple effects and adjustments on top of each other. Like say you have a favorite look applied but now want to apply a Black & White preset on top of that. Now you can without affecting the effects below that and having adjustments reset. This is a big big plus.

Conclusions

With this update ON1 has brought a few, what I believe to be, very necessary additions. For me Lens correction is huge, especially for architectural stuff and even for some  trees that may extend to the quarters and eliminating Vignetting that a few of my lenses show depending on aperture. It’s great to have a clone stamp tool  it really helps me clean up some areas of images and of course being able to stick effects makes a LOT of sense

What I still would like to see

The great thing about ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 is that new features are all community driven. So if YOU or I find something does not function correctly or more importantly, if you fee there is a feature you feel you just must have. Send it into the ON1 community and they do listen. Most of these upgrades are from user  feedback

Me? I’d like

A History Panel, I just don’t like ctrl + Z to undo and step back. I like it better to be able to click different point in history to compare and also to eliminate quickly multiple steps I have decided don’t work

Clipping Warning on the Histogram. I like to know where clipping is and show it on screen so I can take my images as far as I can to the edge without detail loss

And that’s about all I can think  of for now.

All in all a really worthwhile update and  one that makes ON1 and even beer replacement for anything you may be using now or subscribing to

The coupon code HDRIG17 doesn’t work. I tried to use it on the upgrade since I am an owner of On1 Photo10 and got “Sorry, this coupon is not applicable to your cart contents.”
